Plum Moth Pheromone Trap (M651)

Plum Moth Pheromone Trap (M651)

'Maggoty' plums? Help to keep the problem at bay using this clever trap (M651)

The most common cause of 'maggoty' plums, gages and damsons is plum moth, Cydia fumebrana.  The pinkish-white brown-headed 'maggots' are the caterpillars of this moth.  Measuring up to 12mm in length they are often found within the ripe fruit and the area close to the stone may become full of the caterpillar's frass (droppings!)  Infested fruits usually ripen prematurely and show a flattened area on the surface - marking the spot where the larva, once full of your plum fruit , has eat its way out.  They then move from here to overwinter under loose areas of bark on the tree.
There are no chemicals to combat this pest available to gardeners. So why not try a pheromone trap? These are hung at head height, on the windward side of the plum tree.  Inside the trap is sticky (very!) card and you need to place the tiny pheromone-impregnated lure on this.  The male moths are attracted to the pheromone lure as it mimicks the 'scent' given off by female plum moths.....they fly in to the trap and come to a sticky end, so dramatically reducing the chance of a female laying fertilised eggs....so dramatically reducing the chances of your plums becoming infested! Simple
Pheromone traps were originally developed to allow gorwers to moniter the number of male moths and so determine the best time to spray.  However in a garden situation they certainly help to keep numbers down.

Full instructions on the pack, but it is worth remembering that the lure releases the pheromone  as soon as it is opened, so only open it when needed.  After 5 weeks replace with the second set provided with this trap.
If you need more trap inserts/lures for use at a later stage, we can supply these too.
